8 New Tips To Edit Your Closet

dream closet domainehome

In addition to a good old fashioned Spring Cleaning, January is the best time of year to perform a closet edit. We’ve all read the same tired tips on wardrobe purging (love these and the Vogue method shown below), so I’ll add a few of my tried and true methods that have helped me fit my style tools in apartments as small as 400 square feet over the years. If living in Manhattan has taught me anything, it’s definitely taught me to live with less clutter and make the most of my space.  vogue closet clean infographic

1. Set a date.

Deciding on a deadline and sticking to it keeps you accountable. It’s my personal goal to finish my closet edit by February 28th.

2. Break it up.

You may have noticed that my deadline is a month away (new mom problems). It is important to keep your goal realistic to avoid feeling overwhelmed, which will just make you abandon the feat altogether. You’re busy! Schedule mini dates to conquer sections of your closet, some in the evenings, a few weekend afternoons here and there.

3. Make it fun.

Invite friends over and let them pick through your castaways, or host a swap party. Even if you’re just tackling a small section by yourself, play Pandora and pour yourself a glass of wine. You deserve it, and it will feel like less of a chore.

4. Invest in storage staples.

One of the best things I ever did for my closet and general sanity was get rid of all of my hangers and replace them with these slim, flocked jams. They save space and prevent garments from slipping. I also love these for making use of vertical space above or below racks, and this bookcase for shoes, boots, and bags. Keeping storage items and hangers the same color keeps the look clean and custom at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

5. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Visualize the benefits of editing your closet: a clean, easy to navigate dressing space that you would be proud of. Pin some #closetgoals for inspiration and think of how amazing it will feel if you find that missing favorite necklace deep in the abyss.

6. Take inventory.

Make note of duplicates and pair down. Have three short sleeve black v-neck tee’s? Chances are, you wear one more than the other two so just keep the one you love.

7. Create a must list and a lust list.

Make note of any must-haves that need replacing or upgrading, as well as a list of things you know would enhance your wardrobe on your phone. Next time you’re out shopping, check that list and try your best not to stray from it when considering a new purchase.

8. Just get the stuff out of your house.

This is a huge part of the purge. Often times we start to sift, only to end up with bags of unwanted items moved to a different closet with intentions to sell or donate but put that off too long. I had never heard of Pickup Please and will be using it this year. For those of us living in New York City without a car, getting this stuff out of our homes and to a charity dropoff is more than half the battle. They donate women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing, shoes, and accessories to families of war veterans and all you have to do is pack it up, affix a prepaid UPS label, and schedule the pickup.

9. Maintain.

Set aside time, whether it’s bi-annual, quarterly, or monthly, to keep your closet in its fabulous new condition.

Let’s do this! What’s your favorite piece of closet cleaning advice?
