Some of you asked me to share my Sardinia and Puglia itinerary and recommendations, so I put together some highlights of the trip. I want to start by saying that we had not been back to Italy for 11 years. My husband surprised me with a trip to Rome and the Amalfi coast for my 30th birthday. That trip was an absolute dream, and we had been dying to return to Italia ever since we returned. Three kids and two moves later, we finally booked our way back. I had my heart set on Sardinia and Puglia, and employed the help of Alexandra at My Kalokari to help us with booking our hotels. She’s fantastic, so bookmark her or follow her on Instagram for your next trip planning.
Here are my Sardinia and Puglia itinerary and recommendations:
In Sardina, we stayed at the CPH Pevero Hotel. I love the vibe and the ground of the hotel. The pools were beautiful and service was great. We had plans to go to the beach on our first day to relax away the jet lag, but the beach club was closed.
Instead we walked to the public beach down the road, Pevero Beach Stabilimento Balneare, which was beautiful, fun and had a low key locals vibe with a bar serving top tier spritzes. We did not rent a car in Sardinia and we were able to get around easily using taxis from the hotel and ubers to get back. If we had stayed longer in Sardinia, we probably would have booked a car.
We stayed for two nights in Sardina, and loved dinner at Frades La Terrazza which was delicious and overlooks the harbor on a cliff. We spent the first half of the second day in Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo. It is a must visit if you love high end shopping and lunching with gorgeous views. The Roberto Cavalli boutique was one of the most beautiful and fabulously on-brand spots ever, down to the snake stair rail.
We flew from Sardinia to Bari and spent half the day exploring downtown Bari, which is a beautiful historic coastal city. It is known as the birthplace of orrechiette, so we stopped for lunch at Orecchietteria San Nichola, and it was the best calamari and orrechiette I’ve ever had.
It’s close to the oldest basilica so we walked over and checked it out. There was so much to see in Bari, I almost wish we had stayed for the whole day, but it was an incredibly hot day and we were ripe to relax after our early morning flight. We made the drive from Bari to Borgo Egnazia. The drive was gorgeous and scenic along the coastline and took less than an hour.
Our welcome could not have been better. We were greeted with a delicious bottle of rose and the most incredible focaccia waiting in our room. Borgo Egnazia might be the most beautiful place I’ve ever stayed, with every corner more gorgeous than the last. It even smelled incredible. They have multiple large pools (I counted five but there may have been more) and our favorite was the quiet pool because we were usually the only two people in sight. The service was impeccable and the food was out of this world.
I absolutely loved the beach club, which is accessible via a short ride on the cutest carts.
The shrimp tartar at the beach club was incredible, and I highly recommend going there for dinner as well whether you stay at Borgo Egnazia or not. The sunset from our table was stunning and the food was even better. Also of note, the beach club chairs are so comfortable, and you have the option of being on a sandy beach, a grass beach, or a wood deck so there is something for everyone.
There are so many beautiful cities and towns to see in Puglia that I wish we had stayed one more day. Monopoli, a seaside town with a mix of historic charm and modern architecture was a favorite of mine. I also recommend a day trip to Martina Franca, and Alberobello (though I don’t think you need to spend more than half a day there).
Thank you to Alexandra at My Kalokari for helping us book our perfect stays.
