This is what I wore to my anniversary date out with my husband. It was insanely humid, so please pardon the fact that I look like a wet dog. We went back to our old stomping grounds in the East Village of Manhattan where we lived for the better part of a decade together. We walked around, grabbed a beer at Good Beer, shopped at Tokyo 7 and had one of the best meals of my life at Shuko. I remember one of our first dates together, when I told him he seemed like a nice Midwestern boy who wanted to get married and have kids. I also told him that I was not interested in marriage or kids, so he might be barking up the wrong tree and that he should probably date someone else. He said no thank you, politely (such a nice Midwestern boy). He said he knew we were good together and he wanted to date me anyway. Less than three years later, we were living in Chicago and engaged. Five years later, we were married and living in Manhattan. 11 years later, we are living in our first house with two sons (a 2 year old and a 5 month old) and our dog (now 8!). He’s showed me how wrong I was, and that a nice preppy boy from Chicago is the perfect match for me. I’ve shown him that he loves the most bohemian neighborhood in New York City, and raw fish (he almost threw up on our first sushi date and pretended he liked it). I guess I am the marrying kind, and it turns out I never truly experienced joy until I became a mother to our children. Life sometimes doesn’t end up lthe way you thought it would, but that’s the beauty of it.
